“Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.” – Max Lucado
Prayer is one of the richest privileges of a child of God. To pray is to connect with the heart of God. To pray is to share in the things that are on the heart of God. To intercede in prayer does not require that you know the one whom you are lifting up in prayer, but that you know the One who you are lifting up your requests to.
In Jeremiah 29:12 (ESV) the Bible says, “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.” And again, 1 John 5:14 (ESV) says, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.” It is with this confidence that we can approach the throne of God to uplift in prayer the precious little children in rural India; knowing that the heart of the One who created them in His image is able to answer our prayers and grant them the fullness of life which He desires for them.
Children living in poverty have impossible obstacles that they face every day. Some of their challenges are big such as disasters, abuse, serious illnesses, and more. But there are also those seemingly small obstacles they face which are just as hard to overcome, such as loneliness, fear and sadness, among others.
How can you help? You can start by praying fervently for children living in poverty. Here are some specific ways to pray for children in India:
Education: Children living in poverty in India are at a much higher risk of being deprived of their basic right to education. As a result they become victims of child labor, child trafficking, child marriage and other such social evils. Pray that God would open doors of opportunity for them where they could acquire their basic right to education and break out of the cycle of poverty.
Family: Often, poverty coupled with parents’ alcohol/drug addiction or involvement in prostitution as a source of income, marks the family life of a child in poverty. This being the case, children are exposed to domestic violence either as witnesses or as victims and some even go days or weeks without seeing their mother who makes a living by selling herself. Pray that these children would experience the joy of family.
Safety: Living in poverty makes these children vulnerable to a whole host of external factors that could cause them danger. Lack of proper housing puts them at the risk of becoming victims to various diseases, harsh weather, anti-social elements, and more. Pray that God would keep them safe and be their shield and refuge.
Faith: Living in the reality of poverty makes it hard for faith to take root. It is hard for a child to imagine the existence of a God who is greater than all the brokenness and corruption that they witness day in and day out. Pray that children in poverty will see the light in their darkness and turn to God in prayer and find faith that will sustain them.
Provision: The hurt of being hungry for days together only fills a child with uncertainty, making it hard for them to believe in divine providence. Further, children in poverty who have had to toil long and hard to contribute to their families’ day to day needs cannot begin to think that there would be someone who would provide for them when they call on Him. Pray that these children will learn to trust that God desires to provide for their every need and that they would experience God’s faithfulness and His providence with food, education, jobs and a way out of their poverty.
Joy: The very word ‘child’ is synonymous with ‘joy’. However, it is a sad truth that these children who live in poverty are bogged down with many a negative emotions that flood them given the reality of their situation. But children have a way of putting a smile on another’s face even though they themselves might be in deep pain. So, pray for them, that they would experience true joy that comes from knowing Christ and being filled with unspeakable joy amidst their situations.
Childhood: It needs no mention that children in poverty are devoid of childhood itself. They are burdened with various cares and responsibilities that rob them of their childhood. Pray that God by His grace and mercy restores to them their childhood through miraculous ways, causing them to believe that there is One above all who loves and cares for them.
Their country: India, although known to be racing ahead in many fronts, is still much behind when it comes to protecting its children and securing their rights. Pray that this country would realize that the future of the country is at stake if their children of today are not protected and attended to.
